Common causes, ranked by likelihood

1. AC compressor clutch wear or bearing (most common)

A rattle or squeal that appears only when the AC engages usually points to a worn clutch plate or clutch bearing, not the pump inside. The clutch is often serviceable on its own — far cheaper than a full compressor. A noise that comes and goes as the clutch cycles is a classic sign.

2. Drive belt or tensioner/idler pulley

A squeal on start-up or a chirp that changes with engine revs can be a glazed drive belt or a worn tensioner/idler bearing near the compressor — easy to mistake for the compressor. These are belt-and-pulley jobs, not AC-system jobs.

3. Low refrigerant or system pressure fault

Low gas or a pressure imbalance can make the compressor cycle hard and knock. We check pressures on gauges; if gas is low, we find the leak before recharging rather than masking the noise with a top-up.

4. Worn compressor (replacement territory)

A deep metallic grinding that's constant with the AC on, sometimes with metal in the system, points to internal compressor wear. This is genuine replacement — and when it's needed we say so and quote it honestly, not before.

5. Loose mounting or heat-shield rattle

Sometimes the "compressor" noise is just a loose bracket, bolt or heat shield vibrating at certain revs. Cheapest to rule out, and worth checking first.

We listen with the AC cycling on and off to separate clutch noise from pump noise, inspect the belt and pulleys, read system pressures on gauges, and check mountings. Only then do we tell you whether it's a clutch job, a belt/pulley job, a gas job or a compressor replacement — so you never pay for a compressor when a clutch or belt was the fault.
